Counsels and Maxims

Counsels and Maxims find Schopenhauer at his gloomiest. Despite its pessimistic outlook, the strength of the arguments in this collection saved the German philosopher's career after the failure of some of his earlier work. Deeply influencing the later work of Nietzsche, the ideas developed here contain the essence of his philosophy of practical materialism in its later and more humanistic form.
