In the late 17th century, a movement began in Germany that would shake up an already fragile Lutheran church. Pietism, as the movement came to be known, departed from many of the orthodox Christian practices of the day. An emphasis on morals and individual piety over the Scriptures and sacraments led to a rift in the church that hasn’t been fully repaired.
