Forestry and silviculture

As remote sensing data and methods have become increasingly complex and varied - and increasingly reliable - so have their uses in forest management.

From recycled products to organic food, the movement to be "e;environmentally friendly"e; is now expanding into the forestry field.

Much attention has been given to above ground biomass and its potential as a carbon sink, but in a mature forest ecosystem 40 to 60 percent of the stored carbon is below ground.

Remote sensing and GIS are increasingly used as tools for monitoring and managing forests.

In this book, an ornithologist and a forester have combined their skills to try and tease out the real facts behind the various arguments on forestry.

The Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI) is a forest survey on national level which started in 1982 and has already reached its 5th survey cycle (NFI5).

For more than 40 years I have been engaged in timberline research.

Drawing from a decade-long collaboration between Japan and Russia, this important volume presents the first major synthesis of current knowledge on the ecophysiology of the coniferous forests growing on permafrost at high latitudes.

The 21st century has seen the beginnings of a great restoration effort towards the world's forests, accompanied by the emergence of an increasing literature on reforestation, regeneration and regrowth of forest cover.

When it comes to reproduction, gymnosperms are deeply weird.

Mycorrhizal fungi are microbial engines which improve plant vigor and soil quality.

Building on more than a decade of innovative research into multi-source forest inventory (MS-NFI) this book presents full details of the development, outputs and applications of the improved k-NN method.

Pine wilt disease (PWD) is unquestionably a major threat to forest ecosystems worldwide.

Carbon and Nitrogen in the Terrestrial Environment is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary description of C and N fluxes between the atmosphere and the terrestrial biosphere; issues related to C and N management in different ecosystems and their implications for the environment and global climate change; and the approaches to mitigate emission of greenhouse gases.

Amsterdamse Bos, Bois de Boulogne, Epping Forest, Grunewald, Zonienwoud; throughout history, cities in Europe and elsewhere have developed close relationships with nearby woodland areas.

Forestry has been witness to some dramatic changes in recent years, with several Western countries now moving away from the traditional model of regarding forests merely as sources of wood.

Climate changes, particularly warming trends, have been recorded around the globe.

Agroforestry has come of age during the past three decades.

Recent history reveals that both the large-scale reforestation projects of the 20th century have often been less successful than anticipated, and that tree growing by smallholders - as an alternative means to combat deforestation and promote sustainable land use - has received relatively little attention from the scientific and development communities.

Increasing evidence suggests that the composition and spatial configuration - the pattern - of forest landscapes affect many ecological processes, including the movement and persistence of particular species, the susceptibility and spread of disturbances such as fires or pest outbreaks, and the redistribution of matter and nutrients.

In the summer of 2003, a workshop was held in Portsmouth, NH, to discuss land measurement techniques for the North American Carbon Program.

This chapter describes the processes involved in the transport of material over hillslopes.

Jose and Gordon's Toward Agroforestry Design is an important reference for anyone interested in exploring or managing the physiological and ecological processes which underlie resource allocation and plant growth in agroforestry systems.

Global awareness of environmental issues has increased on an unprecedented scale.

It is indeed an honour for me to write the foreword to the second edition of Forest Entomology in West Tropical Africa: Forest Insects of Ghana.

Non-timber forest products (NTFP) hold economic and cultural signi?

This book brings together a selection of original studies submitted to Biodiversity and Conservation that address biodiversity and conservation in Europe.

Forest mensuration is one of the most fundamental disciplines within forest and related sciences.

In the past, lack of understanding at the nexus between the forest sector on the one hand and strategic management on the other, has led to failures in many countries to realise the potential that forest sector development offers.

The apoplast may be considered as "e;the internal physiological environment of plant bodies"e;, that essentially maintains homeostasis.

A top priority in climate research is obtaining broad-extent and long-term data to support analyses of historical patterns and trends, and for model development and evaluation.

Tidal freshwater forested wetlands represent an intriguing and und- studied type of ecosystem in the southeastern United States.

Emerging from decades of intensive research into alpine timberlines, Trees at their Upper Limit presents a complete modern synthesis of current knowledge on the ecophysiology of tree growth and survival on high mountains in Europe.

There are many compelling reasons for policymakers to pay more attention to forested regions and invest more resources there.

Demand for timber and fibre continues to grow and is being met by increased reliance on plantation forestry.

In an era where climate change, natural catastrophes and land degradation are major issues, the conservation of soil and vegetation in mountainous or sloping regions has become an international priority.

From time immemorial, firewood has been a very important source of energy for mankind.

For the first time, this opportune book provides a comprehensive treatment of the many innovative, non-timber bioproducts that may be derived from Canada's vast forests, including their potential economic, social and environmental impacts.

'Homegardens' are integrated tree - crop - animal production systems, often in small parcels of land surrounding homesteads, and primarily found in tropical environments.

Norway spruce (Picea abies L.

Animals including humans are highly dependent on plants to provide many different nutrients including iron in a useable form.

In the late 1980's, a considerable amount of research addressing the effects of acidic deposition was begun, much of it related to the Congr- sionally mandated National Atmospheric Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP).

Samuel Johnson (of Boswell fame) said about writing, 'whatever is written without effort is in general read without pleasure' and 'the unexamined word is not worth reading.

Computer Applications in Sustainable Forest Management presents state-of-the-art computer applications in a variety of specialty areas of forestry, including inventory, remote sensing, information management, modelling and visualization, biometrics, forest and harvest planning, bioeconomics and marketing, and decision science for management.

This book has been developed as a forest inventory textbook for students and could also serve as a handbook for practical foresters.

During the latter part of 2004, Helen Buitenkamp of Springer Publishing emailed me that the first edition of Handbook of Urban and Community Forestry in the Northeast is the best volume in its field and inquired whether we'd be interested in compiling a second edition; I replied that we certainly would, and started working on it imme- ately.
